GOZO CHANNEL SIGNS NEW COLLECTIVE AGREEMENT WITH UHM

1st October 1999 saw the signing of a new collective agreement between GOZO CHANNEL COMPANY LIMITED and the UNION ÓADDIEMA MAGÓQUDIN (Parastatal Section) which includes the workers on deck, the engine drivers, the Sales Department and shore employees.

This three year agreement with effect from 1st October, includes financial benefits for all employees from 1st January 1999, improvements in working conditions and the introduction of the “Job Description" for each employee. It is anticipated that the new collective agreement will help to increase the Company’s efficiency in order to be able to provide a better service to all the commuters using the ferry service between Malta and Gozo.

The Collective Agreement provides several benefits to employees including higher wages and a commitment from the Company to provide training to employees at all levels. Training will also enhance career development and customer service especially in view of the commissioning of the new vessels. Furthermore, as part of the company’s policy, Gozo Channel will be ensuring that the new vessels will be ISM (International Safety Management) and ISO 9000 certified.

Mr Sullivan stated that this agreement is beneficial to both the Gozo Channel Co Ltd and all its employees which stand to gain from this agreement. He thanked all those who contributed towards the successful conclusion of this agreement and praised all Gozo Channel’s employees for their maturity and commitment which help the Company to deliver the best possible service to Gozo and to all its customers.

Union Óaddiema Mag˙qudin Secretary, Mr Gejtu Vella stated that this Collective Agreement takes into account the interest of all the workers as well as those of the Company and must be considered as a model for other future collective agreements. Apart from an increase in wages, the Parastatal Section of the U.H.M. and the Company agreed to extend the health scheme as well as to introduce for the first time the Welfare Fund. Another improvement included the restructuring of grades which are expected to increase efficiency, salary and aspirations to all Gozo Channel employees.

Sullivan, General Manager, Mr Marvic Fenech Adami and Human Resources Manager, Mr Joseph Angileri signed on behalf of Gozo Channel Co Ltd. and Parastatal Section Secretary, Mr Joe Grillo, Shop Steward, Mr Joseph Portelli and Workers’ Committee members Mr Anthony Attard, Mr Grezzju Bonello, Mr Manwel Cassar and Mr Teddy Pace signed on behalf of UÓM.
