PROFESSIONAL TRAINING FOR PROFESSIONAL NAVIGATORS
Gozo Channel inaugurates new Simflex Navigator Simulator

In line with its commitment to enhance training and improve reliability through proper training initiatives, Gozo Channel Co Ltd today inaugurated its new Simflex Navigator Bridge Simulator, a professional electronic device which teaches and trains navigators how to manoeuvre vessels according to different environmental circumstances. The Simulator was inaugurated by the Hon Giovanna Debono, Minister for Gozo in the presence of Gozo Channel Chairman Mr John E. Sullivan.

Speaking about this latest initiative, Mr Sullivan stated that “the manoeuvring capability of Simflex, allows a navigator, either experienced or inexperienced, to test and train the manoeuvring characteristics of a new or existing vessel in open or restricted waters and exposed to winds, currents and waves and also during day, night or fog environments. The simulator is controlled using real manoeuvring controls interfaced to the computer hardware and identical to the controls fitted aboard the new ferries.”

Mr Sullivan added that “the simulator includes the preprogrammed characteristics of the Mgarr and Cirkewwa ports thus allowing our officers to practice manoeuvring the vessels in and out of harbours in all weather conditions. In fact, the effects of underwater currents and strong winds on the vessels and how the vessels will respond, can now be experienced through the simulator thus preparing the officers in case of an eventual emergency at sea.”

Mr Sullivan concluded that “this new investment is aimed at ensuring that our officers receive the best possible training because ultimately, this is for our customer’s benefit. In fact, our 3 Masters have recently followed an intensive course at the Nautical School where they have upgraded their respective certifications in order to be in line with present day requisites and familiar with our new vessels.”

The Simflex Navigator is designed as a user friendly Windows based simulator that really brings the port to the bridge. Fully equipped with large instrument consoles, projector screens and real manoeuvring handles, the simulator includes facilities such as self instruction for port approach, ship manoeuvring instrument handling. All manoeuvres can be then analysed in detail using a replay program equipped with an analysis and debriefing facility.
